Matter gives compatible consumer devices a common language. MQTT gives builders a light, flexible way to move local device data.

Matter

Matter is an IP-based standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. It covers device setup, identity, supported capabilities, secure communication, and use across more than one ecosystem.

Devices communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Bluetooth is commonly used for setup. Thread devices need a border router. Matter 1.6 also introduces NFC commissioning options and Joint Fabric for multi-ecosystem administration.

Support still varies by device type, platform, firmware, and control. A Matter mark does not promise that every feature works in every app.

MQTT

MQTT is an OASIS publish-and-subscribe standard. Sensors and custom hardware send messages through a broker without knowing which systems consume them.

An owner-run MQTT 5 broker can stay inside the home. TLS, client authentication, topic permissions, and idempotent action handling need careful configuration. Home Assistant supports MQTT discovery for compatible payloads.

Domovoy's boundary

Home Assistant will connect supported Matter and MQTT devices to Domovoy. Fabric, broker, and broad Home Assistant credentials stay outside the model.

Domovoy will support room nodes, presence sensors, NFC buttons, local doorbells, legacy bridges, and energy monitors. Each one needs its own identity, signed updates, revocation, narrow permissions, retention rules, and action receipts.

Check the exact device type and controls that Home Assistant supports. Thread alone does not mean Matter. Some advanced features may still use a manufacturer's cloud.

Domovoy will publish a device matrix after each combination passes with the WAN disconnected. It will not claim Matter certification or universal support before the evidence exists.
